Comparing Software Design Approaches to Online Poker

Players looking to get into online poker have a choice when it comes to poker.  Some online poker rooms are fairly spartan, using only what’s needed in the layout and presenting a flat overhead view of the virtual table.  Some players like these sorts of layouts simply because they tend to play faster –  without bells and whistles the games move along and the amount of hands a player can see per hour dramatically increases.

While a bit boring visually, this type of software can actually be quite advanced.  The majority of those advancements, however, are under the hood.  Built for the needs of serious players before recreational players, these spartan designs occupy a large part of the market, but they’re not the only game in town.

That’s because there’s a breed of poker software that is determined to replicate, instead of replace, the live poker experience.  These rooms provide software that allows players such opportunities as webcam poker and 3D Poker, formats that put much more emphasis on the presentation and graphics as opposed to play speed.  That’s not to say that these tables move at a snail’s pace –  almost any online poker table is going to deal at least double the hands per hour of their live poker counterpart –  but compared to their striped-down brethren they could appear a bit pokey, especially to players who are quite concerned with their hourly hand counts.

Which type of software is right for you?  It’s difficult to make a sweeping generalization, but our best shot at one sounds like this: Players who want to aggressively multi-table and get in as many hands as is humanly possible will prefer the simpler tables, and players looking to find something of the live poker experience online will likely prefer the flashier tables.  Lucky for you, it’s easy enough to try both and determine what’s best for yourself.
