1. Learning the rules and then assuming they are now the next Doyle Brunson

Ego, arrogance and ignorance.

Poker is an interesting game with many facets. One of the most interesting is the personality types that are drawn to the game. Understanding this aspect of the game will go a long way to helping you get to grips with beating most opponents but also it may ring true a bit closer to home and help you take the next steps to becoming a winning poker player.

The beauty of the game is it’s seeming simplicity. The fact that many can learn the rules and mechanics of the game in a matter of minutes makes poker a game that lots of people are happy to try out.

The real danger for a lot of budding, poker superstars is also the same reason the game is so profitable for many others and that is the fact that a lot of people refuse to believe that there is any more to it. Not many even consider looking into a poker school in an attenpt to get some poker lessons.

You’ll often find the more uneducated players playing lots of hands and pulling off lots of random, crazy and insane bluffs that when you think about it, don’t make a great deal of sense. You’ll see these players pulling off what they think are ‘great plays’ based on what they may of seen some of the top pros do on TV.

It’s important that you don’t let yourself fall into this trap and make sure you do all that you can to educate yourself and learn how to win at poker.

2. Poor table selection

Not finding the fish, bad position against tough players, not moving to new tables when the fish bust out.

Even after you’ve taken the steps to learn how to play poker for beginners it’s not going to be of too much use if you’re playing against expert players.

In poker the money comes from weaker and lesser educated players and if you want to maximize the profitability of your time spent playing then finding these weaker opponents is a skill, well worth mastering.

So how do you easily find these players?

There are actually many different ways to find the fish (weaker players) in online poker games. You have a variety of software and poker tools to help you, websites that keep track on players stats such as sharkscope or poker table ratings, your own observations of their play at the table, but I have a quick strategy that works really well for finding these fish with ease.

Look for the players with less than a full stack!

Sounds a bit simple right? Well that’s because it’s brilliantly simple.

Good poker players understand the importance of keeping their stacks topped up to the maximum allowed for the table limits, so much so that they often have their poker software set up to auto reload their stacks as soon as they fall below the table maximum.

So when you see a player that never tops his stack up then he is very likely a fish. In an ideal world you would pick tables that have players with over 50 blinds but under 100 sat down. When you join the table, make sure to get these player sat immediately on your right or on your right plus one. Having the weaker players sat to your right means that you’ll have position on them most of the time which in turn makes it more likely that you’ll be the one pocketing their money.

One thing to keep in mind is that when this player busts out or leaves, if there are no more clear fish at the table then that is also your cue to leave and look for greener pastures (find another table with some fish playing in the game).

3. Tilting

Steaming, playing poker with rage, lack of self control.

If you have played poker for any period of time or if you plan to then you will have to deal with the subject of tilt. I would say that even after you learn the correct poker strategy to become a winning poker player, all of this will mean nothing if you are exceptionally prone to tilt.

If you (when you) feel yourself getting tilted then you need to have a plan of action to deal with it. This is such a vast subject that it warrants it’s own book on the subject but the simplest thing to do when you’re feeling like you’re off of your A game is to simply stop playing and take a break.

This sounds and is easier said than done but it’s important that you can step away from the tables once the rage kicks in. At this point you are unable to make calm, logical and rational decisions and instead your chips will be guided into the middle by emotion and are then much more likely to be lost.

Remember that online poker will always be there, the games are always running and there will always be fish swimming around for you to skin. So take breaks and be sure to only play when you’re feeling fresh, happy and ready to play some solid poker.
